WhitiangaWhere is it?Whitianga sits on the east coast of the Coromandel Peninsula on the shores of Mercury Bay. It is the location that is the key to the towns’ success, tourist-holiday makers flock here during the season. What’s it like? The population of just less than 4000 is swollen during the season drawn by Buffalo Beach, the town beach, and a number of other unique beaches just a short distance away. This is a resort town nothing more and nothing less but it is still an attractive place with more to recommend it than a simple stretch of sand. What to see and what to do.The water is where it is at. Whether it is surfing, kayaking, snorkelling, sailing or diving all these sports are available. Tuition is laid on, as is equipment hire. If you prefer something a little more sedate then there are glass bottom boat trips out on the bay or game fishing for Marlin and Tuna. Over the years Whitianga has built a reputation for its traditional Maori bone carvings, some of the places even give the chance for visitors to carve their own Tiki, a traditional carved human figure. Whitianga is a base that many use for visiting nearby attractions; there are a number of gorgeous secluded beaches all accessible with a little effort and planning. A trip to Hahei with its beaches and islands is a must, don’t miss Cathedral Cove with its extraordinary limestone arch. The other great beach in the area is Hot Water Beach just south of Hahei. Geo thermal activity just beneath the surface means that if you arrive 90 minutes either side of low tide, dig a hole in the sand, let it fill with water then sit in your own hot tub ‘til the tide comes in. How great is that? Eating, drinking and sleeping.Whitianga and the surrounding area is well served with places to eat and drink. The cuisine on offer is varied, from international menus to fast food it is all there. The same can be said of the accommodation, a wide choice and good availability although expect the high season to be much busier. As a prime resort, prices tend to be a little higher here than elsewhere on the Coromandel Peninsula. |
