TimaruWhere is it?Timaru is a port city on the east coast between Dunedin and Christchurch. What's it like?It proclaims itself a city but with a population of sub 30000, it is a very small one. If you are driving between Christchurch and Dunedin then this isn't a bad place to stop but you won't find yourself tarrying over long. What to see and do.The South Canterbury Museum is a fair example of a small provincial museum with the usual array of local artefacts both natural and man-made. Possibly of more interest is the Aigantighe Art Gallery. This 900 piece strong collection of New Zealand and European art is contained within a well-preserved Victorian mansion. The Canterbury Bight is host to a population of Hectors Dolphins and cruises can be booked for trips up and down the coast to catch sight of these rare sea mammals. The one time of the year that Timaru may distract the passing visitor is over the Christmas period when there is a Summer Carnival, a ten-day long festival of music and entertainments. If none of this appeals then it's the DB Brewery visit for you. Eating, Sleeping and DrinkingThere is a good choice of places to rest your head but booking is advisable for the carnival period. There are a wide number of cafes, restaurants and bars. Prices and quality are reasonable if unexciting. |
