The Centre is a centre of excellence for museology, providing advice to other museums throughout Britain. Egypt Centre staff regularly give lectures and talks to museum groups and other outside bodies on widening participation in university museums; social inclusion; volunteering, etc. The Egypt Centre opened to the public in September 1998.
