Russell

A small historical town with a colourful past. Russell is something of a contrast to Paihia its near neighbour. Quiet and sleepy for most of the year - though it does get busy during the summer - the town benefits from its poor road access. It may be an attractive, tranquil retreat, an antidote to the noise and bustle of Pahia but it was not always so.

Russell has played a central role in inter-tribal wars and the wars between Maori and Europeans but its chief notoriety is owed to the whaling trade. As a busy port it attracted all kinds of disreputable types. Sadly, where such folk go the missionaries are never far behind. The town that grew up from the ashes of the town almost destroyed in the first New Zealand War was more like the pleasant place of today.

Apart from its atmosphere and appearance, there is not loads to do in Russell. There are two of the oldest churches in New Zealand, dating back to the 1830’s and 40’s, but mostly it’s just a great base from which to explore the bay.

There is less choice of accommodation here and prices tend to be a little higher but so is the quality. The same can be said of the town restaurants. Quality and price are higher but choice is more limited. Don’t come here for a wild time; Russell sells itself on its peaceful aspect and for most of the year this advertising is accurate.
