Livingstone

Named after the explorer and located in the south of the country, Livingstone is at the heart of the tourist industry. It retains a pleasant feel with elements of colonial past mingling easily with the African present. It is the town's proximity to Victoria Falls and the National Parks that make it such a magnet for visitors. It is also a great place for the danger fixated (see below). Those of a more relaxed (??) inclination may prefer to book one of the many 'booze cruise' boat trips down the river. Expect a riotous night.

Things To Do - Places To See

Victoria Falls

Whatever you do don't miss it. This is one of the natural wonders of the world. The Falls are the biggest tourist draw in Zambia. You can see Lions elsewhere, you can bungee jump from a crane at your local fair but there is only one Victoria Falls.

Located on the Zambezi, straddling the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, Victoria Falls, when the river is in full flood, is a truly awe inspiring sight. Bigger than Niagara, over a mile wide and 300 feet high, as much as 10 million litres of water go over the drop every second when the river is at its highest.

The time of year that you go will affect the view that you get. The river is highest between April and June so the views will be at their most misty and the rainbows at their most vibrant. September through to November the water is at its lowest so the view is clearer and sunsets less obscured by spray.

The view is also different from either side of the border, if you can it is worth going across to Zimbabwe to see the Falls from that side.

Doing Something Reckless

Move over Christchurch, New Zealand, Livingstone is rapidly becoming the adventure sport capital of the world. The origins of this are based around the white water rafting expeditions that run daily on the rapids of the Zambezi (depending on water levels). To this, the original adrenaline rush, other foolhardy activities have been added. It is possible to do all manner of daft activities in, on or above the river. You can bungee jump into the river gorge, microlight over it, Raft, Kayak or River-Board down it.

There are several companies offering all manner of such experiences and trips can be booked in either Livingstone or Victoria Falls town (on the Zimbabwean side). If you are going across the border at any stage, make sure your paperwork, visa etc are all in order.
