Hamilton

Stuck between Auckland and Wellington, Hamilton is New Zealand’s fourth most populous city. Situated just inland from the sea on the west of the North Island it was founded by Europeans in the 1830’s although archaeological evidence indicates settlement in the area dating back to the 17th century.

The city straddles the Waikato River and this is the source of much of the activity for visitors with boat trips and kayaking or simply strolling along its banks. For the early risers, with a head for heights, there are hot air balloon rides.

The Waikato Museum of Art and History is worth a visit. In a modern five story building on the riverside, the museum has rotating exhibitions from all over but the highlight is the permanent display of Tainui Maori culture. Don’t miss the war canoe!

Elsewhere there is the Hamilton Zoo. A short distance from the city centre, this is a well laid out collection, devoted to the breeding of endangered species.

Hamilton is a busy city and the nightlife is enlivened by a large student population.

There is a wide choice of places to eat and sleep that suit all budgets. This being a studenty city in New Zealand there are some great bars to enjoy as well.
