Georgia Travel Guide

Named for George II this was one of the original British colonies and acted as a buffer zone between the other colonies and Spanish Florida. With the exception of Atlanta, Georgia is a sleepy, rural place.

Historically the role the state played in the civil war is of most interest. Until Sherman led his troops in from the north, Georgia had seen little actual fighting. Sherman came in, razed Atlanta to the ground and then marched to Savannah on the coast, adopting a fierce, scorched earth policy as he went.

After the war, the price of cotton plummeted and economic recovery was slow. The state did recover and by the start of the 20th century was again able to attract outside investment.

More recently Georgia has achieved prominence on the world stage through its politicians (Martin Luther King Jr and Jimmy Carter), the Olympics in 1996 and its musical contribution; REM and the B-52's are from the town of Athens, whilst Little Richard and Otis Redding hail from Macon.

When to Go

All year round, the weather is pretty good. Summer is the time for tourists and places do get busy. Autumn or spring the scenery takes on gorgeous seasonal hues.
