Albury

Where Is It?

Over 200km inland and about half way between Sydney and Melbourne Albury is a town divided. Albury sits on one side of the Murray River (in NSW) whilst Wodonga (in Victoria) sits on the other and these two towns have now merged to become one.

What's It Like?

A good place to break the journey between Sydney and Melbourne Albury also offers ready access to the charms of the Murray, the Ski fields, or the wineries of Victoria. The town is lively enough but Albury is really only a brief, if pleasant, stop sort of place.

What To See And Do?

The town has an arts centre, a botanical gardens and a regional museum, which are all small, efficient places that won't delay you long. Quality is good but quantity may disappoint. For the more energetic there are canoe trips up the river or bike trails around the town. 10 miles outside of the town is the Ettamogah Pub. This is the archetypal Aussie drinking hole; sadly, it was designed that way (the rickety veranda, for example, is quite safe, that's how it was built), rather than evolving and decaying over a number of years. Worth a visit though, they brew their own beer.

Eating, Sleeping And Drinking

For the best choice of restaurants and there are a surprising number, visit Dean St. There are hostels, hotels and camper van parks so accommodation should not be a problem. The pubs are lively enough; its student population keeps the place on its toes.
You could always journey back down the road a short way to visit Wagga Wagga. You could enjoy a glass of Wagga Wagga Red 'an Australian table wine, best for laying down and….' Unless you know the 'Philosophers' sketch from Python the previous sentence will make no sense.
